When planning for college, stressful things such as money and grades come to the front of your mind. After all, tuition costs have risen 1,120% in the past 30 years. Many people simply can not afford to pay for college out of pocket. While financial aid is always an option, that can lead to a lifetime of debt. However, scholarships are a great way to get a college education without all the debt. But what do schools look for when giving scholarships? Today, we will be explaining what steps need to be made to get a head start on that scholarship.
We don’t necessarily mean this in the physical sense (although that will always help), we’re talking about your online presence. We’ve all heard the horror stories of people losing their jobs over a controversial Tweet or a Facebook picture showing you doing something you’re not supposed to, don’t be one of these!
Make sure your online presence is clean and professional. Go through all the pictures you are tagged in and delete any that involve alcohol, tobacco, etc. Google your name, and see what pops up. You never know what may have been posted years ago that will pop up with a quick search.
Be A Part of Your Community
Students who volunteer have a huge advantage when it comes to scholarships. Scholarship sponsors look for people who are an active part of the community and strive to do good things. By being a part of your community, you are showing initiative and show that you will make a fine addition to any college.
Look Out for Essay Contests
Essay contests are great because often times people get lazy and don’t want to partake in them. Do not be one of these people. When an essay contest pops up, make sure you involve yourself with it. The more essays you right, the more likely that yours will get noticed.
Apply For Every Eligible Scholarship & Grant Available
Last but certainly not least, it’s highly recommended that you apply for everything you can! If you see available and relevant scholarships and grants that you can apply for, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t. A lot of the times, people just don’t apply for these and because of that, they’re more easily achievable. Do yourself a favor and apply to as many as you can – you never know how much money you may receive by simply filling out a form!
